Alex van Heerden (34), lead player, trumpeter, vocalist and accordionist of Cape Dutch Connection for many years, passed away on 7 January 2009. Eleven days before his untimely death a live recording was made in Franschhoek at Jazz on Friday at La Brasserie. The musicians were unaware of the recording, with the result that the album registers the immense enjoyment when likeminded musicians play together, as well as the spontaneity of Alex’s extraordinary talent.
